SEREMBAN: Malaysians, especially Muslims, must avoid being totally immersed in the internet culture, especially Facebook and Twitter, said Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.

He added that facilities like internet could not be accepted wholly because it was a form of business introduced by the West and “Malaysians were just users.”

“We are not saying that they cannot use Facebook or Twitter but when using such facilities they must upkeep the values taught by Islam, Buddhism or Christianity to maintain our culture,” he told reporters after opening a Seminar on the 1Malaysia concept here on Saturday.

He added that Malaysians who used internet services on social networking sites should be careful with what they see and hear.

“We must be strong in our believes and culture because the identity and image of our country depends on us.

“They are just selling Facebook, Twitter, L-Band and various other services, even through space, as a product but we do not do such business. We accept all this in a state of cultural shock,” he said.

He chided some Malaysians who belittled those who were no savvy of the Facebook and Twitter culture.

“We should not be quick to condemn or look down on those who do not use Facebook. Newspapers are still relevant, so is Facebook, but do not be carried away with everything and disregard the old system,” he said.

Rais also praised the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) for its success in tracking down a student from the National Arts Culture and Heritage Academy for posting a public safety threatening comment on Facebook about the recent spate of attacks on churches while discussing the ongoing “Allah” controversy on the popular social networking website.

“Syabas to the commission for its action in nailing those who used Facebook, Twitter and SMS for the wrong reasons.

“As a former analyst of the law in the country, I wish to advise the people that they cannot escape from the law for their actions,” he said.

Rais said the Information Department had also found that 62% of Malaysians understood the 1Malaysia concept.

He added that the Government would initiate more programmes featuring the 1Malaysia concept, especially for students. – BERNAMA

Oh Please-lah

Yesterday in twitterzen, this news being circulated, it’s about the Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi want’s the private sector to use Bahasa Malaysia instead English. Read a bit about the news below.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians in the private sector should use Bahasa Malaysia and not English to show pride of the national language, Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said yesterday.

He said they used English 99 per cent of the time and hardly communicated in Bahasa Malaysia.

“This also occurs in government-linked companies where we have this weird culture of people speaking to each other in English instead of the national language,” he said at the launch of the Bahasa Melayu International linguistics seminar here.

Puad said the private sector, by not using Bahasa Malaysia, had tarnished the image of the national language.

He said Malaysians should emulate the French, Japanese and Koreans who were loyal to their language.

Ignorant Malays

10112009891scale600Last Tuesday I manage to attend YTL 4G Innovation Network signing ceremony between YTL, Samsung, Cisco, just to name a few. I got the invites thanks to David Wang/Blogjunkie since he got extra and wanted to pass along to mobile developers especially. And I got to attend it. There’s many familiar faces. Kamal Fariz, Aizatto, Kugan Malaysian Wireless, Kegan Malaysia Crime, Richard Azlan Abas, Mike from iTrain and managed to knew Tham Keng Yew from Socialwalk that i’ve mistakenly recognize him as @zilch . Oh yeah saw Daniel Cerventus too. So after signing ceremony, it was followed by a luncheon.

The table seating arrangements were distributed by profession. Me came as Flavert Media Lab representative thus seated me altogether with Kegan and Mike with Tham. During lunch, we were served with, I think, not a chinese cuisine, but rather mixed up. But then, as we enjoy the business lunch together, sharing technologies about mobile development with Rocky Agrawal from YTL, one thing that spoils it all.

Lets talk about petrol in Malaysia

Indeed a sensitive issue. Try shouting “oil price increase” and you’ll see a herds of vehicle rushing to the nearest petrol pump.

But come to think of it, oil price is a complicated issue. Why?

Malaysia is an oil exporter

Yeah. As we know, Malaysia is blessed with many export commodities, one of it is Petroleum. We have many oil reserve especially in East coast. Wait. I didn’t think we still have many because Petroleum created from the remains of creatures during Paleolithic/ Dinosaur age. Terengganu and Kelantan have the oil reserve in their sea area especially. Malaysia export the oil and also use it for citizen’s vehicle. Thus, being subsidize.

Malaysia subsidize the oil to the people

Yup. Government subsidize the oil to the people. Despite that, price still fluctuate and the price still deemed expensive. Fresh graduates who can afford a car, might can’t afford to maintain it. Let say every fresh graduates has a basic salary of RM1500. And for basic first hand car ( saga/viva/myvi ) they may pay Rm400-500 every month and then add to their fuel, i assume RM200 per month base on the engine capacity. The total of it already near to half of their salary and then add in home rent if applicable and also paying back their sponsors/loan, imagine how much they left to survive and save. Well no wonder there might be a numbers who didn’t pay back to PTPTN.

Some people now using motorcycle to cut down their daily fuel usage. Some using their vehicle just to get to the nearest public transport, especially PUTRA/LRT/RapidKL or Komuter and Monorail and then changing trains or buses to go through office. But does using public transport solve all the problem?
